EX WB6CMH, WA6HZE, K6DXC
First licensed on November 22, 1961 as
WN6CMH. In those days when you were a novice class ham you
had one year to upgrade or you were off the air. I pushed it
pretty much to the end and upgraded in September 1962. I was
issued WB6CMH at that time. I would have to say that those
early years of my ham career at age 12 and 13 were some of
the best times I have had on the air.
I had two of the finest elmers I could
have wanted. My dad WA6HZE, and John Gill, (uncle John to
me) W6UOL. Sadly I say they are both silent keys
today.
When the vanity callsign program started in the early 90's I
applied for my fathers call.
One day my son, Ray, came over to visit and laid a novice license
KC6ZOC, down in front of me. Needless to say I was very
surprised, not to mention beaming with pride.
Giving it some thought of how neat it would be for him to be
the third generation Ham in the family to have WA6HZE, I
applied for a new Vanity call of K6DXC. Ray then obtained
his grandfathers call. I know my father would have been
extremely proud to see his grandson have his call.
Ray lost interest in Amateur Radio for a number of years,
but I kept his license renewals up for him knowing that one
day he would again become interested. Recently Ray upgraded
to General and gave me the incentive to cram for a couple of
weeks and we went together to take our test. Ray breezed
through the General exam and I managed to get by the Extra
Class by only missing a few. I wanted to change my callsign
to reflect this upgrade and applied for K6RF. By the FCC
random picking method when several applications are received for the
same
call, I was lucky enough to get K6RF.
I especially enjoy CW operating and QRP. Although I do
operate at all power levels.
