The K6RF Porta-Base is constructed from 22 gauge steel. This steel comes in sheets which are 4X10 foot in size.
The sheets are layout for cutting as flat blanks of the Porta-Base. Then cut on a commercial sheet metal shear to size.
Once cut each blank is dipped in muractic acid to remove the galvanized finish and  to assure a clean finish for painting.
Next the blanks are formed into the  shape you see in the pictures at left. A vertical "lip" is spot welded to the back of the base to help keep your FT-817 in place.  The bases are then primered. Once dry they are painted black, which matches the color of todays radios.
A foam honeycomb pad is glued to the top of the base to help protect your radio from scratches. The feet are applied to the bottom of the base which completes the finished product
The K6RF Porta-Base raises the front of your FT-817 approximately 2 1/2 inches for a more comfortable viewing angle.
A simple accessory and your use of the radio will be much more enjoyable without having to strain to see the small display these radios have.
